The Sapphire Coast of NSW is one of the world’s best locations to view the epic Humpback Whale annual migration. Each year tens of thousands of Humpback Whales pass the waters off Narooma, Bermagui, Tathra, Merimbula and Eden on their annual migration from Antarctica to the Great Barrier Reef.
Humpbacks and Southern Right Whales can be sighted on their northern migration during May to July, however it is on their Southern Migration where the fun really begins!
Each year during August and September humpbacks can be sighted feeding in the waters off the Sapphire Coast! Often we do not need to travel far to find large pods lateral and lunge feeding and in 2020 & 2021 we also observed whales 'bubblenet' feeding! From late September to late November we see the mothers bringing their new season calves back down the coast. These young calves are energetic and playful.
It is simply beautiful and awesome to watch a mother teaching her young calf how to be a humpback whale - how to breach, how to tail slap, how to become one of the acrobats of the sea!
